Watery eye surgery, also known as Punctoplasty, is a procedure that corrects punctal stenosis (overflowing of tears from eyes).
The goal of watery eye surgery is to ease the symptoms of tearing, discomfort, and potential eye infections caused by blocked tear ducts or overflowing tears.
Watery eye surgery (Punctoplasty) can provide the best, long-lasting, often improving the eye health and tear drainage system.
Compared to traditional surgeries, watery eye surgery can be performed using minimally invasive techniques, reducing recovery time and discomfort.
It can be safely performed on most healthy individuals with minimal risk of complications. But, a consultation with a qualified surgeon is crucial.
Watery eye surgery (Punctoplasty), aims to correct issues like punctal stenosis or blocked tear ducts that lead to excessive tearing.
Excessive tearing can result from overproduction of tears or obstruction in the eye’s drainage system.
By fixing the drainage pathway, watery eye surgery eases symptoms like watering, recurring eye infection, swelling and redness.
You may consider watery eye surgery if you are experiencing:
Overflowing of Tears
By correcting blocked tear ducts, Punctoplasty reduces the discomfort of excessive tearing.
Irritation Due To Watering
Overflowing of tears causes irritation which can be eased by fixing the drainage path.
Eye Infections
By facilitating proper tear drainage, the surgery reduces the risk of eye infections related to stagnant tears.
Swelling
Effective tear drainage helps decrease swelling around the eyes caused by tear build-up and blocked path.

Watery eye surgery (Punctoplasty), is our effective procedure designed to repair the tear drainage pathway, leading to improved eye health. Here is a detailed guide to help you understand the entire process from enquiry to procedure with Mr Jeeva.
Booking a Consultation: The first step is to schedule a consultation with Mr. Jeeva, one of our experienced Consultant Plastic Surgeons.
Scheduling Surgery: Given the lead time for surgery, many patients book their surgery slots at the same time as their consultation.
Assessment: During your consultation, Mr Jeeva will thoroughly assess your eye condition and discuss the results you hope to achieve.
Suitability: Not everyone is suitable for the procedure. Mr Jeeva will provide an honest assessment.
Eligibility Rate: On average, 73% of our patients are suitable for the procedure. The remaining 27% are not, and we will not proceed if we believe the results won't meet your expectations.
Preparation: Before the surgery, the patient is given local anaesthesia to numb the area. In some cases, general anaesthesia may be preferred.
Incision: A small incision is made at the punctum, opening of the tear duct.
Fixing the Drainage Path: The procedure typically involves enlarging the tear duct opening and clearing blockages. In some cases, a stent may be placed to keep the duct open.
Bandaging: The eye may be covered with a bandage to protect it during the initial healing period.
Same-Day Discharge:
Patients can go home on the same day as the surgery. After surgery, you can expect mild:
-- Swelling
-- Bruising
-- Tightness around eyelid
All of these usually subside within a week or two after surgery.
Take care by:
-- Wearing an eye patch for 24 hours post surgery
-- Using antibiotic eye drops.
-- Applying cold compress.
-- Avoiding strenuous activities and rubbing or touching the eye.
Following the aftercare tips by Mr Jeeva.
All surgeries carry risks, including cosmetic procedures. There is a very small risk of complications, such as infection and damage to the eye.
These risks, along with all aspects of the surgery and its costs, will be discussed during your consultation.
After your surgery, you’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions and will have a follow-up appointment about 7 days later to assess healing and remove sutures.

Have a question in mind?
Punctoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve the drainage of tears by widening the tear ducts (puncta) and reducing excessive tearing (epiphora).
Watery eye surgery has the following benefits:
-- Normal tearing
-- Improved vision
-- Reduced risk of infections
-- Healthy eye
Swelling and bruising may resolve within 7–14 days after treatment; however, proper recovery may take months.
Punctoplasty is generally an effective and one-time procedure, but some patients may require additional treatments if symptoms recur.
You can remove the pad the day after your operation. First, wash your hands, then take off the pad and dispose of it. Clean your eye gently with gauze and saline solution, then apply the prescribed ointment. Continue using any other eye drops unless advised otherwise by the doctor.
The procedure is generally not painful due to the use of local anaesthesia or sometimes sedation. Patients might experience mild discomfort during and after the surgery.
-- Your eye may be bruised for about a week.
-- If you have pain, take an over-the-counter painkiller like paracetamol.
-- You can start driving once your vision is clear.
-- Avoid wearing contact lenses in the operated eye(s) for two weeks to allow for healing.
Ultimately, deciding on watery eye surgery is a personal choice. If you’re bothered by excessive tearing, swollen eyes, and disturbed vision, this surgery could be an option for you to get relief. Consulting with our qualified surgeon can help you determine if it’s the right decision for your specific situation.
